From
our personal collection, excellent late 18th Century, signed, tall push
up "hog scraper" candlestick. Standing 7 1/8 tall, the base has a
4" diameter and the round top has a 1 3/4" diameter. The bottom is
nicely beveled or canted down at an angle. Signed in the iron push
up button is "JAS AVIS". Neither of the "S's" are deeply cut
in the iron, but we believe they are present.
Condition
is Excellent, with only some minor bends in the top cup and some very minor
black paint loss. The slide works smoothly and the square shaped nut is
in place on the bottom of the shaft pin. The iron has old and dry
black paint intact on all areas but where the top meets the scraper.
We purchased the candlestick from a local estate a number of years ago
and all the fine and early items in the estate came with a Pennsylvania
provenance. It is unknown if the maker was a Pennsylvanian.
