This is one of the finest
and rarest quilts we have owned.
Made of satin & silk
ribbons and patches with attached embroidered pieces, it is dated "1891"
by the maker. All hand pieced of the loveliest ribbons. The
center rectangle is pieced of tiny triangles and looks like a stained glass
window, with metallic thread separating each little piece.
It was purchased at a Denver, Colorado
estate sale about ten year ago and no other history has become available.
For the last ten years it has been wrapped in acid free paper in storage.
This, perhaps, accounts for its pristine condition. Only one ribbon
has damage and it is pictured below. In the black silk border the
material has some tiny splits. These splits not visible unless the material
is pulled apart. It has a lovely light pink & beige floral silk
back and that, too, is in excellent condition. Contrary to many "silk"
displays of this vintage, this quilt is robust and not delicate, excluding
the above mentioned.
The quilt is surrounded by burgundy
rope on two sides and pale peach lace and fringe on the other sides, these
match some of the ribbon color. The two large patches are a Lion
and a ship "REGATTA". Attached in the center is a family of owls,
on black velvet, with tiny stitches of Moon & Stars overhead.
There are also small flowers and butterflies attached to the side borders.
Offering an opinion as to
what "memory" or what "presentation" this quilt is commemorating would
be pure speculation. Suffice it to say, it makes a wonderful, vivid,
happy and colorful presentation and would be the centerpiece of any room
or situation!
It is 52 inches by 42 inches.
