In our research we couldn't
come up with a definitive answer as to which company made this neat airplane.
The American Flyer planes appear to have the same mechanism to power the
propeller and some also have "500" numbers and the word "Monoplane".
Also, some of the American Flyers have the same 18 inch wing span.
Regardless, this is one neat
"MONOPLANE" and in quite good condition. Good heavy pressed metal,
with extra nice paint. There is a little edge wear, a few small scratches
and some light remnants of penciled in windows. Will guess that these
"shadows" will remove completely. Don't know if the little extra
gizmo on the from of the prop belongs or not. The rear wheel is present,
but broken loose and missing a portion. There is some paint loss
under the wings from where the wing was put on to the plane?
One
of the stars on the top of wing has some pencil outline.
Boldly marked twice on
back:
EMPIRE EXPRESS
TRADE MARK REG. U.S.A. ....
MONOPLANE
550
PAT. PENDING...MADE IN U.S.A.
Wing span is 18 inches
and the overall length is a good long 20 inches. The propeller mechanism
works well. An excellent addition to any toy collection and a hard
to find large toy "AIRPLANE" and in quite good condition.
